What is acupuncture?

Originated in China several thousands years ago, acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical practices in the world. Inserting needles at specific points in the body relieves specific symptoms and treats many diseases.

Extensive laboratory and clinical researches have been done worldwide. Acupuncture affects the opioid system, neurotransmitters, neurohormones, hypothalamus and pituitary gland, etc. None has fully explained how acupuncture works. Effectiveness of acupuncture speaks for itself.

Acupuncture gained attention since 1970s in the U. S. Currently there are more than 40 graduate leveled acupuncture schools nationwide. Acupuncture is the fastest growing healthcare.

Do acupuncture needles hurt?

Licensed acupuncturists use specific hair-thin solid needles.  It is not the conventional hollow inside needles for injection.  Acupuncture needles are sterile and one-time use only. It is safe and no worries about infection. There is no pain or minimal ache experienced when needles puncture through the skin swiftly and skillfully.

What does acupuncture feel like?

When the acupuncture needle is inserted into the selected specific points according to your body’s specific condition, you often experience a vague numbness, heaviness or tingling sensation around the needle. Sometimes you may sense the energy moving in adjacent areas. Occasionally you may feel the energy moving along the meridian and spreading in distant areas. These all are called the “Qi sensation”, indicating the treatment is working.

Acupuncture makes some people report feeling energized by the treatment, while others say they feel relaxed.

How should I prepare for acupuncture treatment?

Do not brush your tongue coating on the treatment day. Tongue diagnosis is part of the evaluation helping to craft treatment strategy. Right before your visit, avoid either stomach full of food or stomach empty starving two extremes.  Avoid tight shirt and pants; wear loose clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. Afterwards, plenty of rest is preferred.  Avoid physical or mental overexertion.

Do Chinese herbs work?

Yes. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a sophisticated giant system. Chinese Herbal Medicine is the core of TCM. There are several thousands years of practicing, developing and enriching the use of natural medicinal herbs.

Although currently natural herbs are classified as dietary supplement in America, high-leveled professional training is a must to craft an herb formula. Five years full time academic study in China, three to four years in America is a basic education requirement.

Tailored to individual’s health condition, specific formulas and ingredients are carefully selected to address specific needs. With herbal adjusting, physical and mental balance is regained gradually for chronic situations, like allergy or autoimmune disorders. Our body is a dynamic system. Herb formula and ingredients are modified accordingly all the way for the best fit. For acute disorders, such as common cold, flu, cough, herbs work quickly and effectively.

Do you practice cupping, Gua Sha, Tuina, electric stimulation and moxibustion?

Yes, we do. To enhance results, these adjacent methods are applied as supplements for acupuncture treatment.  Meanwhile each of them can be chosen as the sole treatment method to achieve satisfying results.
